Dirk Zoete started drawing cactuses in 2018, simplifying the shapes of the plant into a constellation of semi abstract forms. In these larger format graphite drawings he also uses a frottage technique giving the leaves a wood pattern. Last year Dirk Zoete started the series The Cactus Derivatives consisting of smaller drawings made with pigment and pencil in which he draws an imaginary botanical world. As in his other work of theatrical settings with human figures, animals and masks there are playful references to Bauhaus and constructivist abstraction.
