Matthew Smith’s series of collage works each take all the images of rocks from a single copy of National Geographic magazine, arranging them into a simple pile. The rocks are cut out from the images of the natural world. The resulting images are reminiscent of cairns: piles of stones which are used to mark a route through a landscape. In the Cloud drawings Smith uses logos from the field of computer technology, mostly offering to store information in immaterial “clouds”. However, this information is physically supported on servers housed in large warehouses consuming enormous amounts of energy damaging the environment.
